Use these ports with displays and other devices that connect using either a Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB-C cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your laptop computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you can use an adapter to connect it.

On Mac Studio models with M1 Max, use the USB 3 ports on the front of the computer with external devices that connect using a USB-C cable. To connect an external display, use the ports on the back of the computer with the Thunderbolt symbol .

On MacBook, use this port with displays and other devices that connect using a USB-C cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your laptop computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you can use an adapter to connect it.

Use the power port on your Mac laptop to connect your computer to AC power using a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and USB-C power adapter, MagSafe 2 power adapter, or MagSafe power adapter. Some Mac laptops have a dedicated charging port while others use only USB-C ports to charge.

Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same as Mini DisplayPort . They have the same shape, but use different symbols on the cable and port. However, this port does support Mini DisplayPort for video output, so you can use a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect a Mini DisplayPort display.

Plug the USB-C end of the adapter into a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your Mac, and then connect your flash drive, camera, or other standard USB device. You can also connect a Lightning to USB cable to sync and charge your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

Apple equips its Macs with Thunderbolt ports that are compatible with USB-C. The MacBook Pro comes with either two or three of these ports, depending on the model you pick. A new MacBook Air has a pair. A 24-inch iMac comes with two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports; some models also include two USB-C ports. A Mac Studio has four Thunderbolt 4 ports.

The Thunderbolt ports in the current Mac Studio, 24-inch iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air work with USB-C devices, which have the same connector shape. If you want to use a USB-C device, you can just plug it into one of the Thunderbolt ports. No adapter is necessary.

To connect to a DisplayPort display, you need a USB-C to DisplayPort cable or adapter. Amazon sells the Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter cable for $19, or 18 on Amazon UK, and it supports 4K video at 60Hz.

If you have the 14- or 16-inch M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro or Mac Studio, they have a full-sized HDMI 2.0 port. You can use a regular HDMI cable like the Amazon Basic HDMI cable ($17/12 on Amazon) and plug it in. Keep in mind that the port supports HDMI 2.0, so the maximum resolution and refresh rate it can run is 4k at 60Hz.

The M2 Pro/Max 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro has an HDMI 2.1 port and can run a 4K display at 240Hz, or up to an 8K display at 60Hz. For an 8K display, you need an HDMI 2.1 cable with support for 48Gbps bandwidth, such as the Belkin Ultra HD HDMI 2.1 Cable ($20/51 on Amazon)

To connect a VGA display, Apple has a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter ($66/40 on Amazon). In addition to a VGA to USB-C connection, it also provides a USB-A port for connecting a USB device, and a USB-C charging port to keep your laptop battery happy.

While all MacBook Pro models released in the last five years featured only two to four Thunderbolt ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack, that changed this week with the introduction of the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

These ports allow the new MacBook Pro models to support up to two external displays at up to 6K resolution when configured with the M1 Pro chip, and up to four external displays at up to 6K resolution when configured with the M1 Max chip. Apple's tech specs confirm the HDMI port is HDMI 2.0 instead of HDMI 2.1 to the disappointment of some users.

Key features of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro include the additional ports, Apple's next-generation M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, mini-LED displays with a ProMotion adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, up to 10 hours longer battery life, and more.

What it does: The MacBook Air 2022 keeps the same MagSafe charging method as the Pro 2021. The MagSafe charger attaches to your laptop with a magnet. This means MagSafe will gently pop out of the port if there's excess pressure on the cable, making it far less likely that your entire set up will crash to the floor if you trip over the wrong cable.

What it does: Thunderbolt cables have a few different uses like connecting to external monitors and USB devices, as well as providing enough bandwidth to connect with high-speed devices and extend your laptop's capabilities. While the Pro 2021 had three ports, the new MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt ports that support charging, an external display, Thunderbolt 3, USB 4 and USB 3.1 Gen 2.

What it does: Headphone ports let you connect external headphones using a cable, rather than wirelessly with Bluetooth. You can also plug in legacy or specialty gear, like a microphone. Like the Pro, the new MacBook Air supports high-impedance headphones.

If you currently own a MacBook Pro, you already know how frustrating it can be to vie for USB ports among all of your devices. But with the new version, they've done away with the USB A functionality altogether, leaving you in a bad, bad place when you're looking to plug in your favorite keyboard or tried-and-true hard drive.

HomeSpot USB-C Hubs for MacBook Pro is the exact gadget every new MacBook Pro owner needs. The hub plugs into your USB-C port and adds two USB-C ports, three USB-A ports, an SD port, and a microSD port.

A USB device that works on one port but not another is a sign of a faulty port. If this is the case, the only real solution is to contact an authorized Mac specialist for a hardware diagnostics test and have the port repaired.

Having one or more USB ports not working on your Mac can be hugely frustrating, especially if you rely on those ports for data backup and external peripherals. That said, USB problems are quite rare and are usually easy to fix. Work your way through these troubleshooting tips until you find the one that works and restore your Mac to its full glory.

Sometimes resetting the NVRAM / PRAM on a Mac can help resolve the USB port failure as well, since NVRAM holds various data about keyboards, mouse, trackpad, and other USB components. Here is how you can perform the NVRAM reset on a Mac to see if this resolves the USB failure:

***NOPE***!!!!!! Have reset the SMD and NVRAM **multiple** times, and even went back and tried a fresh/clean install of El Capitan (the last officially supported version of MacOS on the mid-2009 MBP) to a different HDD (swapped out the SSD for the purposes of testing. NOTHING makes the second USB port work (and I tried multiple devices, ones I confirmed worked on other machines).

Thanks. But unfortunately my Macbook Pro (2019) ran out of battery that I cannot apply these suggestions anymore. How am I able to charge its battery when all USB-C ports do not work. This is ridiculous and super annoying as I really need to get some stuff done.

That simple analytical task made me realise it had to be the lightening port on my iphone, now I am well aware that dust can collect in the port which I have cleaned out of this and previous phones on occasions with a needle. So I got my torch and a needle and looked for dust and sure enough there was some dust, in fact it was not a lot of dust but I still got it out and then gave the pins a wipe with a 3mm interdental brush for good measure.

Hey guys, sometimes it happens cause of one pin of the USB port may be bent by pressure of usb device connector! Check your port by looking at the port with a flash light. You can simply fix it. Push the bent pin by tip of a small screwdriver. Good Luck.

So I had the same problem with USB ports not working (on a macbook pro). I tried restarting the computer, updating software (10.9.5), and resetting the Mac SMC following the directions in this article. None of that worked.

A USB port may also stop working if a device draws too much power from it. This I experienced while working with some micro-controllers. Leaving it for a while would bring it back up. A reboot if it needs to be used immediately. 2ff7e9595c
